Welcome to Khan Lab School (KLS), where we empower every student to navigate their own path and foster a culture of learning for the 21st century. Each day at KLS is an opportunity for exploration and growth.
Our philosophy on learning and long-term success is centered on a core set of beliefs and practices that extend well beyond the classroom. First and foremost, we believe that young people are capable of far more than society currently recognizes. Our students take agency in their own learning, achieve at a high level, and make meaningful contributions to the world around them. No talent is squandered here. Our extraordinary teachers and other team members work hard to open up meaningful learning experiences in a range of contexts—from traditional classroom experiences to real-world projects, such as nature-based expeditions in our Lower School or an internship with NASA and other community collaborations in our Upper School. Together we set the bar high and encourage every student to reach their full potential.
The school day and year look different at KLS compared to a traditional school system. Our curriculum, serving students from age 5 to high school graduation, is based in mastery: it supports students in deep learning at a rigorous though self-directed pace, and in advancing as they master content, rather than simply moving forward based upon established time requirements in courses. Students map out their own goals and see them through with guidance from their Advisor. The academic experience is organized into mixed-age cohorts and classes, rather than single grade levels, and the annual calendar follows a 12-month model. Physical activity, wellness, and creative expression are also central to community life.
Since our founding in 2014, we have been shaping a vision that guides our school forward and lights the way for others. As a lab school, we have the opportunity and responsibility to pioneer and assess effective methods for deeper learning--and share our practices with education more broadly. Our aim is to empower students with the creativity, critical thinking, content knowledge, and compassion they need to thrive, serve, and lead as digital and global citizens of a complex and interconnected world.
It is an honor and a privilege to serve as head of school of this innovative, dynamic community. We are grateful to our founder, Sal Khan, whose aspirations for education first took hold in the online learning platform, Khan Academy, and then in his book, The One World Schoolhouse. The same commitment to student-centered learning is at the heart of KLS’s school environment. We are deeply grateful to the KLS families who trust their children to our care and who hold a steadfast belief in the power of education.
I hope our website gives you a glimpse into the authentic and joyful learning that permeates the KLS experience. Come for a visit soon or take a virtual tour, and see our school in action. We look forward to letting our students show you what makes KLS exceptional.
