Overview of Lower School Academics
Our program is designed to provide students with opportunities for learning independent study skills, discovering interests, and deepening their understanding of community through a curricular emphasis on mastery-based academics, advising, and interdisciplinary study and projects.
Advising in the Lower School
Students connect with Advisors in small group and large group advising sessions. Advising offers a structured approach to teaching executive skills, work habits, and social and emotional learning (SEL) so students are prepared to be successful lifelong learners.
Student Cohorts are mixed-age groups where students work together on social-emotional learning, projects, and independent work time.
Academic groups for ELA and Math are separate from the Cohort group and are based on academic ability.
Social & Emotional Learning
At KLS, we put an intentional focus on the relationships that make up our learning community. Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the means by which we formally address and embed the relational aspects of whole child development for all students, beginning in IL1.
