KLS is using SCOIR to send electronic application documents, schedule visits, and assist throughout the search and selection process.
The college admissions landscape has significantly and expeditiously changed. We regularly use backward design planning in college counseling - with college lists, summer plans, course preferences, and everything in between. But in light of Covid-19, we are forced to pivot our plans. With summer plans, internships, standardized tests, and college tours canceled, we have adjusted our program to best support our students. Our rising seniors attend a weekly workshop and discuss pertinent admissions topics with the Director of College Counseling. Seniors also attend regular one-on-one meetings with the Director to discuss their individual plans. Moving online has its downfalls, but it also poses opportunities. It is becoming harder to “quantify” an applicant as more colleges and universities move away from testing and with so many extracurricular activities canceled or postponed. As a mastery-based school, our students are uniquely poised to share their stories with admissions offices, as they have never had a GPA to hide behind.
College Counseling at KLS
Our College Counseling office is dedicated to “empowering students to navigate their own path” beyond graduation. We focus on “fit,” understanding that each student’s educational and professional journey differs. We believe that students should continue to pursue their passions after graduation in the context that best suits them.
Mastery Transcript Consortium
Khan Lab School is a member school of the Mastery Transcript Consortium (MTC). This means we are part of a growing network of schools who are codesigning the Mastery Transcript, a high school transcript that supports mastery learning and reflects the unique skills, strengths, and interests of each learner.
