KLS uses a mastery-based learning model and graduates have a solid academic foundation across all disciplines. KLS creates space within and beyond the core academics for students to explore their passions. In this space, they further develop their skills and apply their learning within contexts that are meaningful to them, and quite often develop expertise at a far younger age than many would expect. Graduation requirements are thus simplified in order to create the time and space for students to pursue what matters most to them.
Students earn either Foundational or Advanced Credit for a course and must earn a total of 22 credits in order to graduate from Khan Lab School. These credits are earned in part by meeting the University of California’s 15 required subject requirements as well as successful completion of a yearlong Senior Capstone project and 6 courses of their choice.

Most, and very possibly all of us, are capable of taking in much more than is currently expected of us. We can go much further, and get there far more efficiently, with self-paced study, mentoring, and hands-on experiences. We can reach more ambitious goals if we are given the latitude to set those goals for ourselves. Sal Khan
